Golden Log

The artist’s existing design looked more like a sculptor than an audio devices, but the ‘Golden Log’ tells the acoustic stories through design language. the existing audio devices got 8 square shaped corners inside the sound box due to the efficiency of production and these corners disturb the function of the sound box. the artist created the sound box into a rounded shape so that it could supplement the disadvantages with its design, and he separated the leg parts with metal so that it could minimize the vibration. the unit part is a ceramic unit from a German company called ‘Accuton’ which made spontaneous feedback possible. and by using ribbon twitter which can only be found in luxury products, it can convey the more precise and wider sound range. .
This historic product is created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of collaboration between the famous German hi-fi brand ‘Accuton’ and ‘Mundorf’. and the product is tuned by ‘Sound forum’ which is the finest acoustic group in Korea and is designed by ‘Analogizm’. ‘Golden Log’ tells us the record of these stories.

When we were little, we all had or own special audio devices. from LP player, portable cassette players, CD players to MP3 player. we had equipments that gives us variety of memories. all these things can be described as a machine that remind us the memories of the past. and we called these devices the ‘audio memory machines’

As the design progresses, things became more simple but less emotional. devices these days blind us with fascinating digital technologies. they just do not have the emotions that we had in the past. we would like to present the sensibility of the analog by creating the new ‘audio memory machines’ that could characterize our past memories. just like our body and mind is still remaining in the analog sensibility even though the world is going through the digitalization, we are hoping to co exsist with the old and the new trough this device.

"So that you can listen to the sound in the silence. and so that you can compose a song in the dark hours "

‘Ak sang Ⅱ’ is a tribute to 김인식 선생 (Mr. Kim In Sik). he was the first Western composer in korea, and the lyricist of the first verse of the Korean anthem.

There’s a story about him getting kicked out of the dormitory while he was attending the ‘Soong-sil school’. Kim In Sik and his friends played the organ with passion at the start. however as the time passes, they all quit playing the organ because they became mindful of what others think of them except for the Kim In Sik. after he became the sole owner of the organ, he played it day and night. but since the dormitory was a public place for students, they weren’t happy with the sound of organ. so they wrote a pledge to expel him from the dormitory. this story tells us how passionate Kim In sik was when it comes to music.

‘Ak sang Ⅱ’ is created for his passionate attitudes towards music. And would like to dedicate this work to him.

The plants have the refined curves. the stamen and pistil from a flower is a consist of dense lines and its beautiful shapes, combined with powerful life force.
Organism II was inspired by these plants. so the design came from the refined curves of a plant’s outside. also the curve from the lighting affected the design. the most important part is the speaker part. they are designed to look like a stamen and pistil, as if the speaker is trying to show that they are alive just like a livng organism.

Collaboration work to celebrate the ‘Ballentines – 21 years aged’. George Ballentine described the innovation as keep moving forward with consistant amount of time and with the basic ideas in mind so that the depth and maturity could develop even though it takes a lot of time. and that is George Ballentine’s idea of the innovation. we wanted to express George Ballentine’s mature idea of innovation through our work. so we used the wood finishing process from an olden days. ‘applying the sap by melting it with an alcohol’. we put the sap in to the Ballentine whiskey and waited for a very long time. and then after the sap melted, we applied the sap on the surface of the wood so that it could convey the idea of mature innovation of 21 years aged Ballentine with the color and the scent. also the sound system was added too. it can be used as a table but also the hidden amplifier can be opened so that people can enjoy the music.

‘Preservation and succession of craftsmanship’. It is the most valued idea of Louis Vuitton since 1854 when it first stared from a trunk workshop and is still valued throughout the 5 generations. Louis Vuitton Korea officially launched social contribution project ‘ARTisans’ that they have been running for a year. ‘ARTisans’ is an attempt to combine the social contribution and art which represents the brand philosophy of ‘pursuit of coexistence of tradition and innovation’. the first project of ‘ARTisans’ includes shedding a new light to the Korean traditional culture by inviting the traditional instrument craftsman and the modern artists together. Han Seung Jae, who majored ‘Wood and Furniture’ in university and is interested in visualizing the sound, made Gayakum playable while sitting on the chair. because Gayakum is typically played while sitting on the floor. also, he added an extra function. it still work as an instrument but the instrument could be used as a table too.

The work was a collaboration with laquer craftsman. the desk was created with Korean style static and simple lines. the wood slightly moves along with the expansion and contraction of itself. so it has some faults as a material for the furniture. but by applying laquer on the wood, it could prevent the wood from cracking due to expansion and contraction. pupil of Kim Tae Hee, No.10 important intangible cultural asset(lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl) Choi Jong Gwan.

Beyond the harmonization of the analog and the digital, high technology is being packaged and expressed by the analog. classic car and an audio system has a lot of things in common. they both have long histories and they all go through the air, and they are hobby and a collection to other people. so the combination between the two would be quite positive. the designer combined the classic car’s organic and structural design with the science based sound system.

speaker is usually stuck inside the square box. in the perspective of a sound, the vacuum tube that makes the sound more profound, is fading away as we enter the digital era. I am tired of the light and precise sounds. I wanted to convey the emotions coming from the innovative things of the old cars. like shining radiator grill, heavy front gets smoother at the end. and also the profound and warm sound coming from the vacuum tube. I wanted to put things like these into my work. nowadays the vacuum tube disappeared and became old fashioned due to the different air resistance. but the combination of these two things are enough to make us feel the nostalgia of the past through our eyes and our ears.
